The basics
How small buds are produced
After drying and curing, flower is sorted by size — often by hand or with a sizing screen. Smaller nugs typically form on lower branches that receive less direct light during the grow.
Because the sorting happens after harvest, small buds are not a different plant, a different grade of cultivation, or a lower tier of material. They are the same flower, sorted by size.
What small buds are not

- Trim — leaf material removed during trimming
